Fiddler on the Roof comes to the Tameside Hippodrome

Tue 13 – Sat 17 March 2007

Ashton under Lyne Operatic Society have been producing shows since 1899, first playing at the Tameside Hippodrome in the early 1920's. Yet in over 100 years this will be only the second time that they have produced Fiddler on the Roof, the first time being 34 years ago in March 1973. The cost of putting on this production is £55,000, which shows the high calibre of the shows produced by amateur societies.

The society has changed somewhat since 1973, when cast members lived locally, whereas now Tevye (played by Terry Chandler) comes from Altrincham and Tzeital and Perchik both live in Southport. However, local lad from Stalybridge Graham Norton played the supporting role of the Rabbi back in 1973 and Graham is thrilled to be recreating the role again 34 years later.

Fiddler on the Roof is set in the Tsarist Russia of the early 1900's and tells the simple story of how a poor milkman (Tevye) lives with his wife Golde and their five daughters. Tevye wants to 'marry off' his eldest three daughters with the help of the Matchmaker, but their daughters have different ideas and wish to marry for love and find their own husband. Tevye is torn between giving into his daughters happiness or trying to hold onto the tradition of his people.

Famous songs include, 'If I was a Rich Man', 'Sunrise Sunset', 'Matchmaker' and many more. Fiddler on the Roof is a wonderful story, full of love, passion and comedy. The story of a man trying to keep hold of tradition, in an ever changing world...

This years designated charity is League of Friends, Tameside General Hospital
